A mother-daughter relationship is one of the most precious bonds between two people. And the lucky women who grow up with their mother as their best friend often go on to form an equally beautiful relationship with their own kids. And one such lucky woman is actress Kate Hudson. Born to The First Wives Club actress, Goldie Hawn, they have a loving relationship that now extends to Hudson’s own daughter, Rani Rose, who is just a year old.
Three generations of this iconic family graced the cover of People for the 30-year anniversary of the “Most Beautiful” series of magazine covers.
During the interview taken long before the lockdown, Hawn and Hudson got nostalgic and spoke about family and relationships, specifically what it means to the former to have a granddaughter. “When your daughter has a daughter, it’s a big deal,” said the 74-year-old actress. “I mean, it really is.”
Considering Hudson was on the cover for People in 2008, having her daughter, Rani Rose join them for this generational cover was a moment of joy. “And now with little Rani Rose,” added the Almost Famous star. “I was so excited. The third generation.”
Throughout the interview, the mother-daughter duo spoke about everything, from style to parenting, reminiscing over memories. But perhaps what truly struck a chord was Hudson talking about how grateful she is for her mother’s unconditional support, especially since it acts as a guide to her own journey of motherhood. “My mom gave me the floor to be able to feel confident enough to go out and feel like my life could be my own,” she said.
“Mom was my greatest cheerleader. And it just made me think about Rani…going, ‘I hope I give her that kind of confidence,’ you know?”
The Bride Wars actress also shared the best advice Hawn gave her about being motherhood. When Hudson was pregnant with her first child, Ryder Russell with her now ex-husband, she couldn’t understand why she felt “so sad.” Then came the words that completely changed her perspective. “Mom’s like, ‘Because the second they leave your body, they don’t belong to you anymore.’ I think that was the most powerful thing you’ve ever said to me,” she told Hawn.
In response to this, the 74-year-old said, “It’s learning to let go. I think a lot of mothers, particularly with their girls, feel helpless when you don’t think you’re needed anymore. … It’s just a phase. There’s an individuation and then there’s a period of time when we come back together again.”
However, Hudson hasn’t just taken inspiration from Hawn about motherhood. Witnessing her mother’s 37-year-long relationship with step-father, fellow actor Kurt Russell is why she uses them as the yardstick for her own relationship with her partner, David Fujikawa. “To live up to that is really the goal,” she said. “Just the fact that they’ve been able to maintain a unit for all of us, in times of turmoil, they really are the center of all of our lives.”
Said Hawn: “When you have your children and you have a man who loves your children, that’s a very tough bond.”
“Mom always said to me, ‘Don’t you ever let a man dim your light,’” she recalled. “So I’ve never defined myself through the way a man sees me, but I can define myself in the unit that we can create together. That is what Mom gave to me.”
