Simon Beck, an artist, must adore the winter! He spends days slogging through the snow in raquettes (snowshoes) along the frozen lakes of Savoie, France, producing these incredible snow art designs. Each completed piece is often the size of three soccer fields, and they work for 5-9 hours a day! When viewed from higher levels, the geometric forms range in mathematical patterns and shapes that create stunning, sometimes 3D, designs.
The weather will determine how long these exquisite geometric formations persist. As new snow falls, Beck develops and redesigns the patterns, sometimes being unable to complete a piece owing to huge overnight accumulations. ‘The major motivation for constructing them was because I can no longer run effectively owing to foot problems, so slogging around on flat snow is the least unpleasant method of obtaining exercise,’ he explained. Gradually, my motivation has shifted to shooting them, and I’m considering upgrading my camera.” For the sake of fitness, spectacular art!
