A huge apartment block in China is said to be the world’s largest and most densely populated building in the world.
If you thought your residential block in New York had a lot of people living there, think again — this single building reportedly houses a staggering 20,000 people.
The building in question is the Regent International Apartment Complex, located in Qianjiang Century City, Hangzhou’s central business area.

There are an impressive 5,000 apartments in the S-shaped establishment that stands 675ft tall, offering 260,000 square metres of space.
The apartments vary in size, according to Parametric Architecture, with some studios and larger apartments with multiple rooms.
But it’s not just apartments in this colossal building — there’s space for residents to live, work, and socialize, meaning occupants theoretically never need to leave the complex.
Facilities Inside the Building
The building features amenities just like a small town:

- Massive food courts
- Barber shops and nail salons
- Medium-sized supermarkets
- Swimming pools
- Internet cafes
The sheer scale of the building has grabbed attention online, with TikTok coverage and drone footage showcasing its immensity.
Over 20,000 people live there, with apartments popular among students, graduates, and young professionals.
Small apartments without windows usually go for around 1,500 RMB per month ($210), while larger apartments with balconies are priced around 4,000 RMB ($570) — substantially cheaper than renting in New York, where the average monthly rent exceeds $4,000.

Smart Design and Engineering Behind Mega-Apartment Living
The Regent International Apartment Complex is a marvel of modern architectural engineering and urban planning, demonstrating how high-density residential design can integrate self-sufficient facilities.
Engineers use sustainable energy systems, advanced HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) technology, and smart water management to ensure thousands of residents can live comfortably without leaving the building.

The complex also leverages IoT (Internet of Things) devices, building automation software, and AI-driven security systems to manage daily operations efficiently — from elevators to waste disposal and energy consumption.
For architects, engineers, and urban planners, this building is a case study in mega-structure design, sustainable urban living, and smart city concepts.
If you’re interested in innovative building technologies, smart urban development, or high-density residential planning, the Regent International Apartment Complex offers lessons in efficiency, self-sufficiency, and modern architecture on an unprecedented scale.
