Tree from dinosaur age bears fruit for first time

In a breathtaking and rare event, one of the world’s rarest trees, known as the Wollemi pine or the dinosaur tree, has produced fruit for the very first time — right in a private garden in Worcestershire, England.

In the quiet village of Wichenford, Malvern, retired couple Pamela and Alistair Thompson were astonished to discover their ancient tree sprouting cones, marking a historic moment for a species that dates back over 90 million years to the age of dinosaurs.

A Living Fossil Rediscovered

For decades, scientists believed the Wollemi pine had gone extinct alongside the dinosaurs — until a miraculous discovery in 1994 changed everything. A small cluster of these prehistoric conifers was found hidden deep in a remote canyon about 125 miles west of Sydney, Australia.

The discovery became one of the most important botanical finds of the 20th century, sparking worldwide efforts to save and propagate the species. By 2010, cuttings and saplings were distributed across the globe — including one that found a new home in the Thompsons’ garden.

A Prehistoric Miracle in a British Garden

Pamela, a 75-year-old retired police officer, could hardly believe her eyes when she noticed the tree bearing fruit.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” she said. “To think that we might grow seedlings from one of the world’s rarest trees feels unreal. I once saw a small one selling for over £1,000, which shows just how rare they are.”

Her husband Alistair, a retired spinal surgeon, shares her excitement. The couple plans to open their garden to visitors on May 4 as part of the National Garden Scheme, allowing the public a chance to see this living fossil up close.

Pamela explained that the tree’s long, drooping cones are male, while the round, spiky ones are female.

“We’re hoping to collect and germinate some of the seeds later this year,” she said. “That would be truly incredible — but we’ll have to wait and see.”

An Ancient Survivor from 200 Million Years Ago

The Wollemi pine — closely related to the monkey puzzle tree — first appeared around 200 million years ago and has remained almost unchanged since. It became the first endangered tree species in the world to be protected through mass commercial cultivation, ensuring its survival beyond its native Australian valleys.

Celebrated by Scientists and Nature Lovers Alike

The first Wollemi pine planted in Europe appeared in 2005 at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where Sir David Attenborough personally helped introduce it to the public.

At the time, Attenborough described it as:

“How exciting that we should discover this rare survivor from such an ancient past. It is romantic that something has survived 200 million years unchanged.”

Now, thanks to one devoted couple in Worcestershire, this ancient “dinosaur tree” continues to defy extinction — writing a new chapter in a story that began before humans, mammals, or even flowers existed.
