In the wake of Alex Trebek’s death and after fans sent out heartfelt tributes to the former Jeopardy! host, his wife Jean Trebek shared a special moment she had with him around three decades ago from the day their happy marriage began.

Sharing a picture from their wedding day, Jean wrote on Instagram, “My family and I sincerely thank you all for your compassionate messages and generosity. Your expressions have truly touched our hearts. Thank you so very, very much. Many Blessings to all, Jean Trebek.”

Since the day they tied the knot in April, 1990, Alex and Jean Trebek have shared 30 years together and become parents to their two children, Matthew and Emily. While married to her loving and devoted husband, Jean also had to endure the difficult experience of watching Trebek suffer from pancreatic cancer.

In an interview that she gave to Good Morning America with her husband beside her, Jean had revealed that it was the hardest to see him “in pain and I can’t help him.”

Trebek also knew the toll it was taking on his wife and said in the same interview, “It’s always tough for caretakers because she has to deal with her worrying about my well-being and also dealing with… I’m not always the most pleasant person to be around when I’m experiencing severe pain or depression, and she has to tread lightly around me.”

Despite the difficulties of living with cancer, Trebek had said that his wife was the one who kept him going ever since he revealed his diagnosis in 2019.

“She’s kept me alive,” the television host previously told People. “If it weren’t for Jean, I’d have put myself out of this a long time ago.”

Trebek met her at a time when he just got out of a divorce and became a newly single father in 1988. He was 47 and she was 23 when they met through a friend, leading to Trebek feeling an instant connection. “With Jean it just happened,” he wrote in his memoir, The Answer Is…Reflections On My Life.

“Sometimes you look at something, you look at someone, and you know. I mean, you’ve heard stories of people who meet and decide within half an hour; I knew this was going to be the person I’d end up with. With Jeanie that’s how it was. I wasn’t looking for love. But I recognized at a gut level that here was someone who was going to complete me as a human being.”

Having lived a note-worthy life as a successful game-show host and also having a love story worth telling, Trebek once revealed that there would be one thing he would have liked to change if he had the chance to do so. “I’m pretty satisfied with my life,” Trebek told People a few months before they celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. “But my wife Jean and I have been together almost 29 years, and I was thinking about President Bush when he died, and all the comments about his life about what a nice guy he is, and how he and his wife had been together 73 years. I thought, oh my gosh… if I’d just met Jean in my 20s we could have had a longer life together.”
