Shark attacks in Australia remain a sobering reality, especially along popular coastal swimming and surfing areas. While many encounters end without serious injury, some turn into terrifying life-or-death situations.
Last summer, one such incident shocked beachgoers in New South Wales, when a 16-year-old boy was brutally attacked by a bull shark. Haunting footage from the scene shows the massive predator chasing the injured swimmer all the way toward the shoreline.
Rising Shark Encounters Along Australian Coasts
Australia recorded more than 20 shark attacks last year, reminding locals and tourists alike that even familiar beaches can carry hidden dangers. Although not all attacks are fatal, the unpredictability of sharks makes every encounter potentially deadly.
On June 29, 2025, at approximately 4:00 PM, swimmers at Cabarita Beach, located on the New South Wales north coast, were suddenly alerted to a shark attack unfolding just meters from shore.
Bull Shark Attack Caught on Camera
The attacker was identified as a bull shark measuring around 2 meters (nearly 7 feet) โ a species known for its aggression and ability to swim in shallow waters.
Witnesses watched in horror as the shark lunged at the teenager, inflicting severe injuries to his leg, arm, and hand, before continuing to circle dangerously close.

Video footage later shared online captured the chilling moment the shark pursued the wounded boy toward the beach, sending shockwaves across social media and news outlets.
Bystanders Rush to Save the Teen
Beach visitors immediately sprang into action, risking their own safety to pull the injured boy from the water.
According to reports from the Daily Mail, one eyewitness described the scene in graphic detail:
โHis bicep was destroyed โ you could see muscle, flesh, and bone. His arm was dangling by a thread. He lost a terrifying amount of blood. I was covered in it.โ
Despite the chaos, quick thinking and teamwork likely saved the boyโs life.
Lifesaverโs Heroic Response
Volunteer surf lifesaver Thiago Collela from the Rainbow Bay Surf Club was nearby at the time. He explained that he had been filming a seal in the water when he suddenly heard screams.
โI ran as fast as I could,โ Collela told ABC Australia. โSurfers were already carrying the boy on a surfboard to the grass, where a female paramedic was waiting.โ
Collela held the boyโs head and spoke to him calmly as paramedics applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

โHe even said, โI think I kicked the shark twice,โ and I told him, โGood job.โโ
Eyewitness Describes the Sharkโs Behavior
Another 16-year-old, Bohdi McDonald, was swimming just 30 meters away when the attack occurred.
He recalled seeing the shark โthrashing about in shallow waterโ as rescuers tried to move the injured teen to safety.
โIt looked like the shark was trying to bite him again,โ he said.
A Miracle Survival
Despite catastrophic injuries and massive blood loss, the teenager survived the attack โ a result many are calling nothing short of a miracle.
Emergency responders praised the rapid response of bystanders, surfers, and lifesavers, emphasizing that immediate first aid and bleeding control made the critical difference.
The terrifying video of the incident continues to circulate online, serving as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the risks that exist beneath the oceanโs surface.
Coastal safety has become an increasing concern worldwide as climate change, marine ecosystem shifts, and rising ocean temperatures influence shark behavior and migration patterns. Understanding ocean risk management, emergency response protocols, and marine wildlife awareness is becoming essential not only for swimmers and surfers, but also for policymakers, insurers, and coastal authorities working to balance tourism, public safety, and environmental conservation.
