It had been over a year since social distancing and travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic kept many families apart. For Steve Krystal, one of his biggest worries was whether his beloved dog, Bitsy — who is both deaf and blind — would still recognize him after such a long separation.
Bitsy: A Puppy with a Big Heart
Five years ago, Hayden Kristal, a comedian and public speaker, brought home a tiny puppy named Bitsy. Despite being deaf and blind, Bitsy quickly adapted to her new home and became a beloved family member.

“She is the sweetest, friendliest, most loving, and loyal dog in the world,” Hayden shared with The Dodo. “She is bold, sassy, and loves adventure!”
Over the years, Bitsy won the heart of Hayden’s father, Steve, who spoiled her with toys and affection. “He is her number one fan and her biggest champion,” Hayden said.
A Year of Separation
Last year, pandemic restrictions forced Steve and Bitsy apart. The thought of not seeing each other for months turned into a full year, leaving Steve worried that Bitsy might not recognize him after such a long time.
“My dad was very worried that… Bitsy wouldn’t recognize him after one year apart due to quarantine,” Hayden explained in a TikTok post.

The Heartwarming Reunion
When the family was finally able to reunite, Steve’s fears melted away immediately. As soon as Bitsy caught his scent, she ran to him without hesitation, wagging and licking him with sheer joy.
“As soon as I got within scent range she totally lost her mind with joy,” Steve wrote on Facebook. “So did I.”
The emotional moment was captured on video by Hayden and shared across social media, where it has since gone viral, touching the hearts of viewers around the world.
A Testament to Canine Intelligence and Love
Steve reflected on the reunion, praising Bitsy’s remarkable abilities despite her disabilities:
“Once again Bitsy proved that the abilities she has are far more impressive than the ones she is missing. What a truly amazing and wonderful soul,” he wrote.
This reunion is a powerful reminder of the incredible bond between humans and dogs. Even when a dog lacks sight or hearing, their love, loyalty, and memory can create moments of pure magic.

Closing Thought
Stories like Bitsy’s remind us that dogs are more than pets — they are family. Their senses, intuition, and deep emotional connection allow them to recognize the people they love, no matter the time apart or obstacles in their way.
