A Filipino fisherman unknowingly sat on a fortune for a decade after discovering what could be the world’s largest natural pearl. The 34kg giant clam pearl, potentially valued at over $100 million, remained hidden under his bed as a good luck charm.
A Stunning Discovery: The World’s Largest Pearl?
The unnamed fisherman from Puerto Princesa, Palawan, stumbled upon the massive pearl over 10 years ago while out at sea. Reports indicate that he retrieved it when his boat’s anchor got caught on a giant clam. Instead of selling or showcasing the find, he kept the pearl under his bed, oblivious to its potential worth.
Measuring an astonishing 30cm in width and 67cm in length, the giant pearl surpasses any previously recorded natural pearls. If officially authenticated, it could dethrone the world’s current largest pearl, the Pearl of Lao Tzu, which weighs just 6.4kg and was last valued at $93 million.
How the Pearl Was Finally Recognized
The fisherman only parted with his prized possession when relocating to another province. He entrusted the pearl to his aunt, Aileen Cynthia Maggay-Amurao, a local tourism officer in Puerto Princesa. Realizing the pearl’s significance, she sought experts to verify its authenticity.
Maggay-Amurao took to social media, stating:
“The Puerto Princesa City would likely earn another prestigious title and a record breaker for having the world’s biggest natural giant pearl from a giant clam (34 kilograms) after being certified for its authenticity. Need help from gemologists!”
Her post gained viral attention, sparking excitement among gem enthusiasts and marine biologists worldwide.
A Potential Game-Changer for the Philippines
If confirmed as a genuine giant clam pearl, this discovery could significantly impact Palawan’s tourism and economy. The pearl, currently displayed at Puerto Princesa’s New Green City Hall, has already drawn thousands of visitors. Authorities believe its value could exceed $100 million, making the fisherman an instant multi-millionaire.
Giant Clam Pearls: Rarity and Value
Giant clam pearls, also known as Tridacna pearls, form naturally inside massive clams in the depths of tropical waters. Unlike traditional pearls from oysters, these unique treasures are exceptionally rare and can reach incredible sizes. Their value is determined by factors such as size, shape, luster, and provenance.
Could There Be More Hidden Treasures?
The waters of Palawan are already famous for producing some of the world’s largest pearls, leading experts to speculate that more undiscovered treasures may lie beneath the sea. If authenticated, this giant pearl could usher in a new wave of marine exploration in the region.
This astonishing discovery serves as a reminder that nature still holds many secrets. What started as a simple fishing trip could turn into one of the greatest gemstone discoveries in history. As experts work to verify the pearl’s authenticity, the world watches in awe, waiting to see if this fisherman’s luck will truly change overnight.
