And for Casey Colvin, that bond became even more unbreakable after surviving the unthinkable.
The roads were blocked
When the fierce Palisades Fire tore through California on January 7, Casey lost his home in the flames — but his biggest heartbreak was not knowing if his two beloved dogs had survived.
He had been at work when the evacuations began, and the second he heard the news, he raced back home — even renting a bike to get there faster. But when he finally arrived five hours later, the roads were blocked. He couldn’t get through, according to NBC News.
That’s when a hero stepped in.
Brent Pascua, a battalion chief with Cal Fire, didn’t hesitate. He broke down Casey’s door, rushing inside the burning home. He managed to rescue one dog, but the other — little Oreo — was nowhere to be found.
Five agonizing days
For five agonizing days, Casey searched, hoping against hope that his small, blonde Pomeranian had somehow made it. Then, the call came — Oreo had been spotted in the debris of a nearby property.
Heart pounding, Casey rushed over. He squeaked a toy, his voice shaking. Suddenly, a tiny, soot-covered Oreo squeezed through a gate and jumped into his arms.
Luckily, reporters were there to capture the emotional reunion.
”You’re alive! Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, God!” Casey sobbed, holding Oreo close.
But the story doesn’t end there.
This week, Casey finally got the chance to thank the man who saved his dogs. Holding Oreo and his other pup, Tika Tika Tika, Casey looked at Brent Pascua with pure gratitude.
”This guy saved your life. This guy saved your life,” he told his pups. Then, with a grin, he added, ”And you look like a Ken doll!”
Brent, humbled, admitted that moments like these help him keep going.
”If that dog could talk, he would have a story to tell. He would have a national bestseller,” he said with a smile.
For Casey, the kindness of a stranger meant everything. “By you leaving the door open, my dogs survived … My dogs would have died if it were not for you,” he told Brent, tears in his eyes.
