Cats do not follow the rules and spend the majority of their time doing whatever they want. Cats who enjoy spending time outside are frequently gone for hours at a time, leaving their owners wondering where they’ve been and what they’ve been up to. Billy’s whereabouts were always a mystery to cat owner Zack King. Billy, King imagined, was going about his business, hunting mice and investigating. He quickly realized, however, that his beloved kitten was leading a double life.
Billy enters and exits through a cat flap as he pleases. He comes in every now and then to say hi, eat, or snooze before heading back out to play. Billy’s girlfriend Olga saw a folded piece of paper wrapped in plastic wrap attached to his collar one day in October when he was inside. She and King carefully opened it, and were delighted to see a message from one of their neighbors. “When your cat is outside, he likes to come see us,” it said. “He’ll sit at the door and meow for permission to enter.” It’s actually quite amusing, and we adore him! We don’t understand where he’s coming from. What’s his name, by the way? Billy is his name. “Greetings from your welcoming neighbors!”
Olga and King responded with a message, which they fastened to Billy’s collar in the hopes that it would reach the original sender. It stated, “We’re so delighted he’s making friends with the neighbors.” “His name is Billy, by the way!” So you were correct. “Be sure to scratch his chin a lot!” Billy returned with another message not long after, and the neighbors are still pen buddies months later. King explains, “We’ve discussed TV and Netflix choices, podcast recommendations, and home cooking ideas.” “We have no idea who the neighbor is or where he lives.” We could inquire about specifics, but we don’t need to—great it’s to have a little mystery every now and again.”
Billy received a “proper mailbag”—a plastic heart container with elastic bands that connects to his collar—from an unnamed neighbor in early January. Billy is still working as a postcat, but the sweet exchanges have dwindled as the weather has become cooler and Billy has spent more time indoors. Nonetheless, the unexpected relationship occurred at a crucial moment for King and Olga. “We were in a bit of a funk as the nights became colder and darker, and limitations and lockdowns forced us to stay at home,” he adds. “To tell you the truth, Billy is a delight in any case. This, on the other hand, was unexpected, fascinating, and extremely pleasant!”
