Photos of a man and a young child fishing at Cahills Crossing in Australia’s Northern Territory have gone viral, sparking outrage and concern. The pair were seen standing at the very edge of the infamous riverbank—a spot notorious for crocodile attacks.
Social media erupted with criticism after the images circulated. “And the parent of the year award goes to? This dude,” one user wrote sarcastically. Another said the sight “left them sick to their stomach,” while others questioned: “What is wrong with people?”
Not everyone shared the outrage, with a handful of commenters downplaying the danger. But experts say Cahills Crossing is one of the most dangerous crocodile habitats in the country. The area is lined with clear warning signs: “Do not risk your life” and “A fatal crocodile attack occurred here.”
Expert Warnings
Matt Cornish, a spokesperson for Community Representation of Crocodiles, explained:
“Cahills Crossing is considered a high-risk crocodile location where people need to be extremely vigilant. We have had crocodile fatalities there over the last couple of decades.”

Reptile handler Mick Bender added that visitors should always stay at least five meters from the water’s edge.
“Crocodiles can strike half their body length in a split second,” he said, underscoring just how quickly tragedy can strike.
Professional crocodile wrangler Tommy Hayes also weighed in on the viral images, saying he was relieved the public wasn’t brushing the incident off.
“Raising awareness about just how dangerous these animals are could save lives,” Hayes said.

A Deadly Reputation
Cahills Crossing, located on the East Alligator River in Kakadu National Park, is notorious for its strong currents and dense population of saltwater crocodiles. Fatal attacks have been recorded in the area, with authorities repeatedly warning tourists and locals to avoid fishing or swimming near the water’s edge.
Despite its deadly reputation, the site remains a popular fishing spot, with many ignoring posted warnings. Wildlife experts fear these viral images send a dangerous message, especially to families and inexperienced visitors.
A Teachable Moment
The incident has sparked broader conversations about crocodile safety and personal responsibility. Authorities are urging the public to take posted warnings seriously and keep children well away from rivers known to be crocodile habitats.
While this story ended without tragedy, experts hope it serves as a wake-up call: in crocodile country, complacency can be fatal.
