A police K-9 in Pennsylvania has died after falling down an elevator shaft while helping the search for suspects in a burglary.

Authorities confirmed that just after 4 a.m. on Sunday officers were dispatched to an old warehouse in Woodvale, Cambria County.

There, they were able to swiftly apprehend two of five suspects, with a K-9 unit then being deployed to assist in the search for the remaining three.

Yet tragedy ensued when, during a sweep of the five-story building, one of the K-9’s, named Titan, fell through an open elevator shaft on the fourth floor.

Police said that Titan was found and rescued, but sadly later died from his injuries.

All five suspects in the burglary were eventually apprehended and taken into custody. Interim Captain Chad Miller, with the Johnstown Police Department, said that K-9 Titan had “served honorably” since 2014, and that he died “in the line of duty”.

A procession for the dearly-departed Titan took place yesterday morning, where members of the community were told they could pay their respects by lining the streets.

I don’t know about you, but it breaks my heart whenever I hear about brave service animals losing their lives in the line of duty.

They give their all in the name of our continued safety, and for that reason alone they deserve the utmost respect.

Rest in peace, Titan, and thank you for your service.
