Terminally ill man enjoys final visit with German sherperds and shares his dying wish

Dogs deserve the chance to see their humans and say goodbye.

They understand more than we often realize — the change in voice, the stillness, the weight of a final moment.

And if you need proof, check out this moving story from New York.

A terminally ill New York City man from Bronx was granted one final wish before his death: to say goodbye to the two dogs who meant everything to him.

The man, who identified himself as Mr. Spencer, was hospitalized at Columbia University Irving Medical Center with an undisclosed illness.

Reached out to pet them

As his condition worsened, he made a simple but deeply personal request — to see his beloved German shepherds, Bowie and Nikki, one last time.

With no family members available to care for the dogs during his hospitalization, they were placed in the custody of NYC Second Chance Rescue. Knowing how much Bowie and Nikki meant to him, the rescue organization worked alongside the hospital’s medical team to arrange a final reunion, according to People.

Footage of the moment shows the dogs gently approaching Mr. Spencer’s hospital bed, immediately recognizing their owner. He reached out to pet them as they stayed close, refusing to leave his side.

“It was a tearjerker, seeing them get so excited to see their owner,” Jennifer Brooks, the founder of the Long Island City-based rescue, recalled to WCBS. “They laid near his bed. We stayed for quite a while.”

Brooks later explained just how central the dogs were to Mr. Spencer’s life.

“Mr. Spencer would talk about his dogs every day, and they knew how important the dogs were to him. They were the only family that he had,” she said.

The emotional reunion left a lasting impression on everyone in the room.

“There was a room of about 10 doctors, and literally, there was not a dry eye in the room,” Brooks recalled.

Only hours after seeing Bowie and Nikki, Mr. Spencer passed away.

Reflecting on the moment, Brooks believes the dogs understood the finality of the visit.

“I believe that seeing him in that state, [Bowie and Nikki] knew they had to move on now, and they’re gonna find a new, loving home.”

With no relatives or caretakers available to take the dogs, Mr. Spencer asked Brooks to make him a promise before he passed — that Bowie and Nikki would stay together and eventually find a loving forever home.

Brooks says she is fully committed to keeping that promise.

An adoption profile has since been created for Bowie and Nikki, describing them as affectionate, loyal, and deeply devoted to one another. The listing notes that the pair must be adopted together, as they are bonded and thrive side by side.

“They’re big dogs, so being out of the city would be nice for them,” Brooks said.

“They’re therapy dog material. Every person in the hospital who went up to them, they licked their hand. They’re super friendly.”

For Mr. Spencer, saying goodbye to Bowie and Nikki brought comfort in his final hours. And for the dogs he loved so deeply, the hope now is that the next chapter of their lives will be filled with the same love they gave him until the very end.

As interest in natural health remedies continues to grow, many seniors are exploring herbs like oregano as part of a healthier lifestyle. Nutrition experts often emphasize that combining antioxidant-rich foods with a balanced diet may support heart health, immune function, and overall wellness. While herbs alone cannot replace medical care, simple dietary choices can play an important role in healthy aging and disease prevention.

So grateful that Mr. Spencer was able to see his beloved shepherds one last time. What a beautiful act of kindness by the rescue group to make it happen — and a heartfelt thank-you to the hospital for allowing it. Rest in peace, Mr. Spencer, and blessings to the dogs as they find a new, loving forever home. 💕🌷
