Trigger warning: The story contains details of violence that may be disturbing to some readers.
One woman and three children were killed in an apparent murder-suicide in Virginia. According to the Daily Mail, a 27-year-old woman along with a 10-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 6-year-old passed away in the tragic occurrence.
The harrowing incident came to light after the officials got a call at 6.15 AM on 20 November from the 100 block of Harley Road in Marion. On arriving at the location, officers found the dead bodies of the woman and two children. A 6-year-old child was found severely injured next to the bodies. Though the child was immediately flown to Johnson City Medical Center, his life could not be saved.
According to WCYB, an 8-year-old child escaped from the scene and informed their neighbor about the violence. “A child had left the residence out in the Thomas Bridge section of Smyth County and had gone to the neighbors to report that something was going on at their house next door… that there was possibly gunfire,” said Sheriff Chip Shuler.
After conducting the preliminary investigations, the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office claimed that the woman killed the three children and committed suicide by shooting herself. They also added there were no other suspects. “We’re not looking for any suspects in this, it’s an apparent homicide-suicide situation,” said Shuler, according to WCYB.
Meanwhile, the authorities have not released the names of the woman and children involved in the incident. The relationship between the woman and the children are also unknown. The 8-year-old who escaped the situation is currently residing with their family members.
The dire incident has left the neighbors of the family in shock. Many spoke of the family and stated they were “good” people. “They pretty much kept to themselves, but the kids were all the time playing in the yard,” said Billy Campbell, their next-door neighbor. “I’m shocked. They seemed like good people to me… the kids and her. Just good people,” said Terry Hutton, another neighbor.
Similar incidents of children being victims of homicides have been reported several times in the past. In May, 2020, a 12-year-old escaped a murder-suicide in Texas. His 35-year-old mother and 8-year-old sister died in the incident. According to the Daily Mail, authorities received a call from a man who reported an argument with his wife. On arriving, the man told the police that his wife fired several shots during the altercation. Though the man escaped, the woman held the kids and barricaded herself inside their home.
Authorities asked the woman to surrender and release the kids. Luckily, the 12-year-old managed to escape from his mother. Though the child tried to persuade his younger one to leave, the kid wanted to stay with the mother. Following his escape, the authorities entered the house. However, they retreated after the woman opened fire. Soon after, they entered the house again and found the mother dead with the younger child.
