19-Year-Old Fisherman Catches Rare ‘Mouse Fish’: A 300-Million-Year-Old Deep-Sea Marvel

In the icy waters off the Norwegian coast, a young fisherman named Oscar Lundahl encountered a creature straight out of prehistory: the enigmatic “mouse fish,” also known as a ratfish. This deep-sea inhabitant, with its bulbous eyes and petite body, is a species that traces its lineage back 300 million years.

What Is the Mouse Fish?

The mouse fish, scientifically known as Chimaeras monstrosa, belongs to the Chimaera family, a group of cartilaginous fish related to sharks. Their unique physiology, including oversized eyes, helps them adapt to life more than 2,600 feet beneath the ocean’s surface. The extreme depths provide low light and oxygen levels, where such evolutionary traits are essential for survival.

Oscar Lundahl (above), 19, caught the unusual creature with bulbous eyes and a small body off the coast of Andoya, in Norway, after a 30 minute struggle to reel the fish in

The Catch of a Lifetime

Lundahl, a 19-year-old fishing guide for Nordic Sea Angling, was fishing off the coast of Andoya, Norway, in waters approximately 2,600 feet deep. Using a line rigged with four hooks, he initially aimed to catch blue halibut. However, after a 30-minute struggle, Lundahl reeled in the unusual fish, which immediately caught attention due to its dinosaur-like features.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Lundahl remarked. “It looked weird, almost prehistoric. My colleague recognized it as a ratfish.”

A Deep-Sea Mystery

The mouse fish is rarely encountered by anglers, as it dwells in extreme ocean depths, often as deep as 3,300 feet. Its large eyes, which dominate its face, allow it to detect light and movement in the darkness of the deep sea.

Interestingly, this creature is thought to be a missing evolutionary link between bony fish and cartilaginous fish. Its diet mainly consists of crustaceans like crabs and sea snails, found on the ocean floor.

Lundahl (above) described the catch as ‘weird’ and ‘dinosaur-like’ but was later told by a colleague that it could be a ‘ratfish’

A Culinary Surprise

Due to the rapid change in pressure during its ascent, the fish could not survive. Not wanting the catch to go to waste, Lundahl decided to cook the fish.

“Despite its unusual appearance, it tasted amazing—similar to cod, but even better,” Lundahl shared.

Lundahl, a fishing guide, had all four hooks on one line when he claims to have reeled the fish in from 2,600ft of water

Why This Catch Matters

This rare encounter not only highlights the diversity of marine life in Norway’s deep waters but also underscores the importance of preserving these ecosystems. Creatures like the mouse fish offer valuable insights into evolutionary biology and the adaptability of life in extreme environments.
