The Rock of Guatapé: A Colombian Landmark Worth Climbing

The Rock of Guatapé, also known as El Peñón de Guatapé or simply El Peñol, is a massive granite inselberg located in the municipality of Guatapé, Antioquia, Colombia. This natural wonder stands at 2,135 meters above sea level and is considered one of the most impressive geological formations in South America.

But the Rock of Guatapé is not only remarkable for its size and shape, but also for the breathtaking views that can be enjoyed from its top. To reach the summit, visitors must climb a steep staircase of 740 steps, which may seem daunting at first, but the effort is definitely worth it.

The observation tower located at the top of the Rock of Guatapé offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape that will leave you speechless. From this vantage point, you can see the winding Magdalena River, the lush green hills of the Antioquia region, and the picturesque town of Guatapé with its colorful houses and tiled roofs.

The history of the Rock of Guatapé is as fascinating as its appearance. According to local legends, the inselberg was once worshiped by indigenous tribes who believed it was a sacred site where the gods lived. In the 16th century, the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the area and named the rock El Peñón, which means “the big rock” in Spanish. The name stuck, and today it is still known by this moniker.

In the 1950s, a group of local climbers led by Luis Villegas climbed to the top of the Rock of Guatapé and planted a Colombian flag at its summit. This event marked the beginning of the rock climbing tradition in the region and also inspired the construction of the staircase that now leads to the top.

Nowadays, the Rock of Guatapé is a popular tourist attraction that draws thousands of visitors each year. The area around the inselberg has been developed into a recreational park with picnic areas, hiking trails, and even a zip line for the more adventurous visitors. The town of Guatapé itself is also a charming destination with a picturesque plaza, a church with a colorful façade, and a lively waterfront.

If you are planning a trip to Colombia, don’t miss the opportunity to climb the Rock of Guatapé and witness one of the most spectacular views in the country. It may take some effort to climb all 740 steps, but the reward at the top is worth every step.
