Over the weekend, a daring and compassionate rescue mission unfolded as at least 79 dogs and cats, victims of unthinkable cruelty, were saved from the clutches of abuse on the small Caribbean Island of Dominica. NBC Chicago News reports that these animals, having endured beatings, torture, and poisoning, were left for dead before the island’s sole animal shelter took them in. A sudden shutdown of the shelter necessitated an emergency response to secure the well-being of these abandoned animals.
PAWS Chicago (Pets Are Worth Saving), unwavering in its commitment to animal welfare, collaborated with Wings of Rescue—a charitable organization specializing in transporting pets facing disasters and other threats to safety—to orchestrate the rescue. On December 2nd, volunteer pilots undertook the challenging task of flying the traumatized pets from Dominica to DuPage Airport in the United States. Subsequently, the animals were transported to PAWS Chicago, where they underwent immediate medical examinations and any required treatments.
Susanna Wickham, CEO of PAWS Chicago, emphasized the urgency of their involvement in the rescue, stating, “We just had to step in when we heard what was happening.”
Currently, some of the rescued animals are receiving care for minor injuries inflicted by humans and other health issues. Simultaneously, a few are awaiting spaying or neutering procedures. Tragically, PAWS veterinarians identified more complex problems requiring surgery, such as a dog with four broken ribs and a fractured leg, another with spinal damage, and kittens that had been callously thrown into the island’s river before being rescued.
Despite the horrors they’ve endured, PAWS Chicago is determined to give these animals a second chance at a better life. Plans are in place to put them up for adoption and fostering once they have fully recovered.
“We’ve been blown away by how resilient and trusting and loving all of the animals are,” Wickham remarked. “And that’s going to be great because they will find homes despite what they’ve suffered.”
This rescue mission serves as a testament to the power of compassion and collaborative efforts in the face of cruelty. As these animals embark on their journey to recovery, the hope is that they will soon find loving homes where they can experience the care and kindness they deserve, leaving behind the nightmares of their past on the Caribbean Island of Dominica.
