Bird-watchers are well aware that the planet is home to a diverse range of bird species. Although many of these pictures are difficult to view in person, artist Paulina Bartnik (as Embirdery) immortalizes them in gorgeous embroidered brooches. From barn owls to hummingbirds, she employs her precise stitching skills to capture the distinctive aspect of each winged species.
Bartnik tells My Modern Met, “I picked birds because of the gorgeous colors, forms, and feel of feathers.” “I mostly utilize the needle painting method to embroider them, which I believe precisely imitates bird feathers.” To create a textile impression, the artist starts with a backdrop of felt sheets and uses a combination of short and long stitches in a range of colors.
Bartnik is able to give her brooches a sense of volume and depth in this way. Her stitched birds’ faces have all of their distinctive patterns, giving them an amazingly realistic appearance. Not only that, but the many colours she used to produce the feathers give the impression that the bird’s texture shimmers in the light.
