First thought fooled her
A volunteer with R.A.D. Rescue was driving through Bakersfield, California, when something on the side of the road caught her eye — a dog digging through trash, clearly hungry, and clearly alone.
At first, she thought the pup’s extra-chubby face was kind of cute… but something didn’t sit right.
“His head was incredibly swollen from having a tight chain around his neck,” the volunteer later shared on TikTok.
That’s when she realized this dog wasn’t just adorable — he was in serious trouble.
The pit bull, who would later earn the name Chunk the Hunk, was in desperate need of help. The volunteer pulled over, gently coaxed him toward her with some chicken, and loaded him into her car to rush him straight to the vet.
Despite the pain he must have been feeling, Chunk sat calmly in the backseat, his big swollen head resting sweetly as he smiled at the woman who had just saved his life, maybe sensing that things were finally about to change.
And they were.
The swelling around Chunk’s head was treatable, and with proper medical care and time, his face gradually returned to its natural, healthy shape. But it wasn’t just his body that needed healing. Chunk had clearly spent much of his life chained up, with little to no freedom.
Rescuers immediately began working with him to help him learn how to be a dog again. From basic training to just running around and playing, Chunk started experiencing life like he never had before.
Finding a forever home
And he blossomed.
Though he was a bit hesitant at first, he soon became the ultimate good boy; loving, well-behaved, social, and so happy just to be included.
But while Chunk’s transformation was nothing short of inspiring, there was still one major thing missing from his new life: a forever home.
Despite all the love he’s received online and from his rescuers, Chunk was waiting for a family to call his own — someone to spoil him, walk him, cuddle him, and remind him every day that his suffering is truly over.
According to Bakersfield Strays, Chunk’s story went viral with over 5 MILLION views on TikTok — yet he received fewer than five adoption applications. He spent several months in board and training, waiting patiently for someone to give him a real shot at family life.
