Why your dog sleeps on your clothes and what it means, according to experts

Have you ever wondered why your dog leaves its cozy bed only to curl up on your clothes instead? It’s not random — it’s a sweet and instinctive way for dogs to feel close to the people they love most.

Just like children who feel safe near their parents, dogs find comfort in the familiar scent of their humans. If they’re not allowed to sleep in your bed, your laundry becomes the next best thing — a soft, warm pile that smells unmistakably like you.

The Power of a Dog’s Nose

A dog’s sense of smell is extraordinary. While humans have about 5 million scent receptors, a Beagle has around 250 million, and a Bloodhound nearly 300 million. With such sensitive noses, dogs can easily identify individual scents in their environment — including yours.

That means every shirt, sock, or sweater carries a story your dog can read — one that says, “You’re home. You’re safe.”

Why Dogs Sleep on Our Clothes

Experts believe that dogs seek security when they lie on their owner’s clothes, especially during stressful situations like storms, loud noises, or unfamiliar changes in the home. Your scent reassures them that everything is okay.

Sometimes, though, it’s not about fear — it’s just love. Curling up in your scent is their way of feeling connected, even when you’re not around.

Making Your Clothes Even More Comforting

There’s not much you need to do — simply wearing your clothes infuses them with the scent your dog finds most soothing. Ironically, even sweaty gym clothes can be comforting for them. (So don’t be surprised if your pup claims your laundry pile!)

If your workplace or environment is stressful, however, keep those clothes out of reach. Dogs are sensitive to emotional scents — they can detect stress and anxiety through chemical cues in your sweat, which might make them uneasy instead of calm.

Is It Bad for Dogs to Sleep on Clothes?

In most cases, it’s perfectly harmless. Allergic reactions are rare, and many veterinarians see no problem with it. The only real issue might arise if your dog starts ingesting fabric — a sign of anxiety that should be discussed with a vet.

For most pets, it’s a comforting and natural behavior that strengthens their bond with you.

The Bottom Line

When your dog chooses your clothes over its bed, it’s a simple act of love. Your scent makes them feel at peace — a constant reminder that their favorite person is never too far away.

So next time you see your dog curled up on your sweatshirt, just smile. To them, that pile of laundry isn’t just fabric — it’s home.
