Meet Nzuri — The Maasai Mara Lion Whose Curls Broke the Internet, and Why It Isn’t a Salon Job

Lions are famous for their thick, dark, windswept manes. Then came Nzuri, a male in Kenya’s Maasai Mara whose golden mane curls and waves like he just stepped out of a hair salon. Photos and videos of him went viral in October 2025, and the internet has been asking the same question ever since: how did he get that look?

Who Is Nzuri?

Nzuri, whose name means “beautiful” or “good” in Swahili, is a male lion known as Nzuri M6, the son of Olepolos. He was once part of the Topi Pride and is now one of the leaders of a new coalition of seven males. He is believed to be the only one of his siblings with natural curls.

The Photographers Behind the Viral Posts

Images and videos of Nzuri were shared on Instagram by wildlife photographer Kambiz Cameo Pourghanad, a pilot who photographs wildlife as a passion. He called Nzuri “one of the most beautiful lions in Masai Mara” and used the attention to call for protecting Kenya’s lions. A reel posted by Silent Whispers Photography, which South African outlets credited to photographer Samwel Loigero, also reached about a million views.

Why Are His Curls So Curly?

Nobody has formally studied Nzuri’s hair, but experts and reports point to a mix of factors. A lion’s mane is shaped by genetics, age, health and climate, and humidity and rain can change its texture. When a mane gets soaked and then dries in the wind, it can form waves, which may explain Nzuri’s bouncy look. Photographers who have followed him say the curls are likely a mix of genetics, humidity and drying after rain.

What a Mane Says About a Lion

A mane isn’t just for looks. Reporting on lion research notes that a fuller, darker mane is often linked to better health, higher testosterone and dominance, which can make a male more attractive to females and more intimidating to rivals. The trade-off is that a heavy mane can raise body temperature in hot areas and attract more parasites.

Not Everyone Has a Mane Like This

Mane size and color vary widely, and lions in hotter regions often have lighter, shorter ones. Nzuri’s curls are the exception, not the rule, which is a big part of his appeal.

See Lions in the Wild — and Help Protect Them

If Nzuri has you dreaming of Kenya, a few tips can help you plan:

  • Compare Maasai Mara safari packages. Look at guided game drives and lodge or tented camp stays.
  • Buy travel insurance. Medical evacuation cover matters on remote trips.
  • Pack the right gear. Good binoculars and a telephoto camera lens make the difference.
  • Give back. A donation to lion conservation helps protect lions facing habitat loss and conflict with people.
  • Curly hair envy? Humans can compare curl-defining products and leave-in conditioners.
