Luna the White Lioness Looks Too Perfect to Be Real — Her Blue-Gray Eyes and Long Lashes Are All Natural

A cream-white lioness with soft blue-gray eyes and long dark lashes has taken over social feeds, and some viewers were convinced she was made by AI. She’s not. Luna is a real lion living at Nature Park Zoo in Daegu, South Korea.

Meet Luna

Luna was born in August 2025 at Nature Park in Daegu. Her pale coat, blue-gray eyes and dramatic lashes drew so much attention that users compared her to “a real Disney princess.” Photos and videos shared by the zoo spread across social media, where many viewers said they couldn’t believe the images were real.

Not Albino — Leucistic

Luna isn’t albino. Her coloring is caused by leucism, a rare genetic trait that reduces pigment in the fur while the eyes and skin keep their natural color. That’s why she has blue-gray eyes, not the pink or red eyes of an albino animal. White lions are a rare color variant of the African lion, and a variant of the TYR gene is behind the pale coat.

Why Those Lashes?

Her long, dark eyelashes aren’t just for show. Lashes protect a lion’s eyes from dust and other particles. On a pale face, the dark lashes and blue-gray eyes stand out even more. As one post put it, there’s no mascara or filter involved, only genetics, contrast and light.

A Rescue Backstory

Luna’s story is tied to a larger one in Daegu. In 2023, a white lion pair was rescued from a poorly run underground zoo in the city, one of more than 300 abandoned animals found in dark, filthy conditions when the facility closed. Korea Herald reported that the pair later had three cubs on August 18, 2025, at their new home, while the earlier litters they had in the basement zoo did not survive. Luna was reportedly born into this family of rescued lions.

The rescue also renewed public calls in South Korea for stricter oversight of private indoor zoos.

White Lions in the Wild

White lions are rare in the wild and have long been bred in captivity. Their striking coats are the result of a recessive gene, and they’re a favorite at zoos worldwide, which is part of why Luna’s photos spread so quickly.

Plan a Zoo Visit — and Support Lion Conservation

Seeing a lion in person is a different experience from seeing one on a screen. A few tips:

  • Compare Daegu travel packages. Look at flights to South Korea and hotel stays near the city.
  • Buy zoo tickets in advance. Online booking often saves money and time.
  • Protect your trip. Travel insurance covers cancellations and medical care abroad.
  • Give back. A donation to a big cat conservation group supports lions in the wild.
  • Lash envy? Plenty of people compare eyelash serums and lash-lengthening mascaras after a Luna scroll.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Luna? Luna is a white lioness born in August 2025 at Nature Park Zoo in Daegu, South Korea, who went viral for her pale coat, blue-gray eyes and long lashes.

Is Luna albino? No. She has leucism, which reduces pigment in her fur but leaves her eyes and skin with natural color.

Why do her eyelashes look so long? Lashes protect the eyes from dust and debris, and the dark color stands out against her white fur.

Were Luna’s parents rescued? Reports say her family comes from white lions rescued from a closed underground zoo in Daegu in 2023.
