Lassie, eat your heart out!
Masha, a long-haired tabby cat, saved the life of a baby abandoned in Russia’s streets after climbing into the box he was discarded in and keeping him warm, according to health officials.
“The infant had only been outside for a few hours, and thanks to Masha… he was not harmed,” a hospital spokesman told Central European News.
The whiskered hero even meowed to attract the attention of a passing pedestrian.
“She is very calm and sociable, so when I heard her meowing, I feared she had harmed herself,” Obninsk resident Irina Lavrova explained. “Normally, she would have approached me and said hi. You may image my surprise when I discovered her in a box with a baby.”
Masha is a communal cat that is cared after by locals. According to CEN, when she discovered the kid, who appeared to be in good health, she immediately took to him as if he were her own.
“Clearly, her maternal instincts took over, and she sought to protect the infant,” Lavrova said. “He was clothed nicely, with a small hat, and whomever had left him here had even left a few nappies and some baby food.”
The infant was promptly brought to a nearby hospital, where he was examined and confirmed fit and healthy, according to officials. Masha has been lauded as a hero by locals since the child was discovered, and she has reaped the advantages.
“Everyone on the neighborhood is incredibly proud of her,” said Lavrova. “We’ve all spoilt her by feeding her her favorite foods.”
