We know that animals are tenacious, and that they frequently adapt to their surroundings in order to live as best they can. After all, there are many homeless dogs in the world that fight every day to find food and shelter, but it always surprises us how homeless dogs with impairments are also ready to flourish and endure life on the streets.
Shi Bao is known as the mother, and she or he was not always homeless. Her owner abandoned her, and she or he sought safety at Datong’s Kouguan train station in Shanxi Province. Unfortunately, she was involved in an accident that resulted in the loss of her hind legs. Locals say she was either hit by a car or ran over by a train, but she survived and has been on her own since.
Shi Bao just gave birth to a litter of healthy, adorable puppies. Every day, the two-legged mommy walks her infants around the railway station, scavenging for food. The heroic mother ensures that her children are constantly close to her and out of harm’s way.
We understand that animals in China are not as legally protected as animals in other countries, but we hope Shi Bao and her offspring may find an honest Samaritan or animal rescue group that would take them in and put an end to their lonely and hard days on the streets. All animals deserve a loving home, and Shi Bao has demonstrated that she is deserving of real love and a happily ever after.
China is believed to have 130 million stray dogs, many of which are victims of expanding urbanisation, which has seen many people move into high-rise buildings with limited room for pets.
Several of the dogs have a difficult existence on the road. In addition to official extermination programs in many places, there is widespread maltreatment of strays by members of the general public, increasing the chance of capture for dog meat or dying to starvation and disease.
