Yellowstone National Park officials reported an alarming incident involving a man who kicked a bison in the leg, only to face the consequences when one of the formidable animals retaliated, causing him minor injuries. Subsequently, park rangers intervened, leading to the man’s arrest and subsequent detention.
The incident unfolded when park rangers received a distress call concerning a man purportedly harassing a herd of bison and assaulting one of the animals approximately seven miles (11 kilometers) within the park’s west entrance on April 21.
Rapid response from vigilant park rangers led to the apprehension of the individual, who was traveling in a vehicle driven by another person near West Yellowstone, Montana, according to statements released by Yellowstone officials on Monday.
While details regarding the extent of the 40-year-old man’s injuries sustained from the bison were not provided, he faced charges of being under the influence of alcohol, disorderly conduct, and disturbing wildlife.
Accompanying him was a 37-year-old companion, who faced charges of driving under the influence, failing to yield to a police car, and likewise disturbing wildlife.
Both individuals, hailing from Idaho Falls, Idaho, pleaded not guilty during their court appearance on April 22.
Bison, recognized as the largest land mammal in North America, can weigh up to a staggering 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms) with the ability to sprint at speeds reaching 40 mph (65 kilometers per hour). Despite their imposing size, bison are known to react aggressively to perceived threats and have caused injuries to unwary tourists who venture too close.
In light of such incidents, Yellowstone officials emphasize the importance of maintaining a safe distance of at least 25 yards (23 meters) from all large wildlife within the park boundaries.
As the summer season approaches, Yellowstone has initiated the gradual reopening of select facilities, marking the onset of what is expected to be a bustling period for the park, with further openings scheduled throughout June.
