A Dog Left Behind with Nothing but a Note and Diapers
Not every pet owner is ready for the challenges of adopting a disabled dog or cat. However, for those who do, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable. Sadly, many disabled dogs face abandonment instead of love and care.
One such heartbreaking case was Lunita, a beautiful, paralyzed dog found abandoned on the streets of Salta, Argentina, in May 2022. She was left alone with a bag of diapers and a note containing her name, age, and a short explanation stating that her owner could no longer care for her. With no food, water, or shelter, Lunita lay helplessly on the sidewalk, her frail body strapped into a broken wheelchair.
A Desperate Rescue Mission
Thankfully, a dog-grooming employee spotted Lunita and immediately contacted the rescue organization LUBA Salta. Two volunteers quickly arrived to save her, taking her to a shelter where she received urgent medical attention. Later, she was placed in a foster home while her story was shared online in the hopes of finding her a loving family.
After months of waiting, Lunita finally got a chance at a better life when a family from the United States expressed interest in adopting her. A fundraiser was launched to cover the costs of her transport, and soon, Lunita was on her way to her new home.
A Rocky Start in a New Home
Unfortunately, Lunita’s initial adoption did not go as planned. Her new family lacked the necessary experience to properly care for a disabled dog. Neglect and improper care led to severe health complications, including a staph infection caused by mites in her bedding.
Things seemed hopeless for Lunita—until a second family stepped in to rescue her once more. They provided her with the love, attention, and medical care she desperately needed. However, her condition had already worsened; she suffered from scabies, urine scalding, and a painful urinary tract infection that left her in constant agony.
A New Beginning Filled with Love and Adventure
With dedicated care and medical treatment, Lunita slowly regained her strength. She found joy in her new life—playing in the snow, traveling, making friends, and even celebrating birthdays.
On June 15, 2024, Lunita turned 11 years old. It was one of the happiest days of her life, surrounded by people and fellow dogs who adored her. She even got to enjoy a special dog-friendly cake, making memories that would last forever.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
Tragically, just weeks after her joyous birthday celebration, Lunita fell gravely ill. Her breathing deteriorated, and despite intensive care, each time she was taken off oxygen, her tongue turned blue. Realizing that she was suffering, her loving family made the heartbreaking decision to let her go peacefully.
Lunita passed away surrounded by love, leaving behind a legacy of hope, resilience, and perseverance.
