Nature has a way of surprising us with its incredible displays, and one photographer had the opportunity of a lifetime when he captured a stunning sequence of images featuring a massive humpback whale breaching just inches away from an unsuspecting fisherman on his boat.
The remarkable incident took place in California’s enchanting Monterey Bay on a spring day in 2019. Douglas Croft, an avid photographer, was on a whale-watching expedition, hoping to capture some mesmerizing shots of these majestic creatures. Little did he know, he was about to witness a breathtaking encounter that would leave him in awe.
“It was quite exciting! Salmon season coincides with the time when humpbacks are returning to Monterey Bay to feed for the summer, and there were hundreds of boats on the bay fishing,” recalls Croft, reliving the thrill of the moment.
Humpback whales are renowned for their impressive breaches, a behavior where they explosively launch themselves out of the water. Having observed the whale exhibiting this behavior earlier, Croft was well-prepared to capture the breathtaking moment when the whale breached again.
“This whale had breached a couple of times before this, and many times they’ll just keep doing it,” explains Croft, who recognized the potential for an incredible shot.
What sets Croft’s photographs apart is the unique perspective he managed to achieve. While most whale enthusiasts capture images from the open deck, Croft decided to take a different approach. He positioned himself below deck, shooting through a porthole situated close to the waterline. This creative angle offered an unparalleled view of the massive humpback whale towering above the fishing boat.
“The breach was directly behind the fishing boat, which really shows the size. Since the boat is closer, it should look bigger, but the whale is huge! If I’d been the fisherman, I’d probably need some new underwear,” humorously quips Croft.
Initially frustrated by the presence of the fishing boat in his shot, Croft later realized that it added a unique dimension to his photographs. The juxtaposition of the whale’s immense size alongside the relatively tiny fishing boat created a stunning visual contrast, enhancing the impact of the images.
Fellow whale enthusiast Kate Cummings also captured the same breach on video, offering a different perspective from a higher vantage point. Cummings explains the dynamics behind the perfectly synchronized moment: “The whale had already breached multiple times much further away from the fisherman. But sometimes when whales breach multiple times, they’re also heading a specific direction when they’re underwater building momentum for the next breach. I figured the next breach would be around the fisherman because the whale was heading that way, and sure enough! Though I didn’t expect the whale and the boat to line up so perfectly.”
In the world of photography, timing is everything, and Douglas Croft’s remarkable encounter with the breaching humpback whale serves as a powerful reminder of nature’s captivating beauty and its ability to leave us in awe-struck wonder. Croft’s stunning images immortalize the fleeting moment when the natural world and human activity converged in a breathtaking dance of life and motion, a dance that continues to inspire and amaze us all.
