In 1982, a zookeeper at the Izu Shaboten Zoo in Shizuoka prefecture accidentally discovered that capybaras absolutely loved soaking in hot water, and the practice of providing them an onsen, or traditional Japanese hot springs, was born.
Capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, are native to South America. They are semi-aquatic and enjoy spending time in water. So it was no surprise that they took to the onsen like ducks to water.
The Izu Shaboten Zoo was the first zoo to offer capybaras an onsen, and it quickly became a popular tourist attraction. Visitors from all over the world came to see the capybaras relaxing and enjoying the hot water.
The onsen has become a popular enrichment activity for capybaras in zoos around the world. It provides them with a chance to relax, socialize, and groom themselves. The hot water also helps to keep their skin and coat healthy.
Capybaras are not the only animals that enjoy soaking in hot springs. Monkeys, elephants, and even bears have been known to take a dip.
The popularity of capybaras in onsen has led to a surge in the popularity of these animals in Japan. Capybaras are now featured in anime, video games, and even on clothing and merchandise.
If you ever have the opportunity to see a capybara in an onsen, it is an experience that you will never forget.
