“Rosemary works out on the water treadmill a few times a week.”
Rosemary, a 3-year-old Chihuahua, could hardly move when she came to the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana (HSNWLA) in June.
The shelter personnel could tell she was unhappy by her expression and promised she’d be allowed to run and play again one day.
“We’d seen one image, so we knew Rosemary was overweight,” Erin Shirley, a volunteer at the HSNWLA, told The Dodo. “But it was very terrible because she battled with her mobility so much.” “She was fatigued after she stepped outdoors to go pee.”
Rosemary’s relatives turned her up to a shelter in Texas. They requested that she be killed, claiming that the small dog was elderly and suffering from health problems. The shelter personnel could sense something wasn’t quite right about the family’s account of the events.
Following Rosemary’s adoption, the shelter contacted HSNWLA to see if they could assist the overweight dog.
Rosemary weighed in at the HSNWLA at a staggering 24 pounds, more than double the recommended weight for a dog her size. Rosemary, on the other hand, began to lose weight very quickly after being put on a prescription dog food diet.
Shirley stated, “Rosemary uses the water treadmill a couple of times a week and has progressed to 20-minute intervals, which is incredible.” “But simply sticking to her particular diet and putting her out in the yard with the other dogs so she could walk about helped.”
Shirley said, “Once she lost a few pounds, she became much more active.” “The pounds just continued dropping off after that.”
Rosemary had lost 11 pounds and was hardly recognizable by the time January arrived.
Her exuberant attitude now brightens the room.
“She’s always had a lovely attitude,” Shirley explained, “but she was so sluggish when she first came in due to her lack of energy from carrying all that extra weight on her small, little frame.” “However, she now has a personality plus.”
She went on to say, “She’s just a wonderfully sociable, outgoing little puppy now.”
Rosemary is now looking for her everlasting home, someone who will adore her and help her be active and happy. Rosemary is well aware that they exist, and she is eager to meet them.
