We’ve seen plenty of unique proposals, but few compare to what photographer Mark Stewart planned for his long-time girlfriend, Olivia Post.
While vacationing in Hawaii, Stewart orchestrated the perfect setting to pop the question. With his camera set up for a time-lapse, he led Olivia to a stretch of road directly in front of the active Kilauea volcano. There, with glowing lava spewing in the background, he dropped to one knee.
The resulting photographs are nothing short of breathtaking. From the exact moment Stewart asked the life-changing question to the couple’s emotional embrace, the fiery backdrop made the occasion unforgettable.
The Proposal That Went Viral
Although Stewart carefully staged the moment, he didn’t anticipate just how much attention the photos would receive. After posting them to Instagram, the images were quickly shared and eventually picked up by Pubity, where they went viral.

The comments section exploded with well-wishes — and, naturally, a flood of lava-inspired jokes:
“That’s hot.”
“You are the lava of his life.”
“I mean tbh, I don’t think she can say no.”
While social media had its fun, many users also praised Stewart for pulling off such a daring and romantic proposal.

What’s Next for the Couple
Now that the lava has cooled (metaphorically, at least), Stewart and Post are beginning to enjoy their engagement and plan their future together.
As professional photographers, the pair already share a love for capturing life’s most meaningful moments. They currently work together on elopement photography and portrait sessions, and their viral proposal is sure to inspire both their clients and their own upcoming wedding plans.

One thing is certain: Stewart’s proposal proves that some love stories are truly fireproof — even when set against the backdrop of one of Earth’s most powerful forces.
