“By the third night, she was jumping with excitement when she saw us.”
Megan Mannarelli – Martin and her husband hadn’t taken a vacation in years, but they recently found the time. Rafiki’s Rescue, the couple’s special needs rescue, is difficult for them to leave. To make it work, they even brought three of their rescue cats. They went out on a road trip, excited to unwind and rejuvenate, with the car packed and the kitties nestled in.
However, it appears that rescue work follows them everywhere, because four hours into their holiday, they came across an abandoned dog roaming in the middle of a busy road.
They were so far from everywhere at that point in the journey that it appeared extremely possible that the dog, eventually named Kevin, had been abandoned. They knew they couldn’t just leave her there, so they jumped into rescue mode right away.
“When we spotted her, Kevin was afraid, but he was quite interested in being saved,” Mannarelli-Martin told us. “I had to work for an hour to acquire her trust.” I couldn’t chase her down if it made her more scared and led her to go back into the middle of the road. So I remained in the center road divider for an hour, letting her come and go up to me until she finally got near enough for me to grab her.”
They got her seated in the car and scanned her for a microchip once Kevin was safe. Because she didn’t have one, they searched local online forums and called local shelters to see if she had a family seeking for her. Meanwhile, they agreed that taking her on vacation would be the best option.
They came to a halt to gather all of the things they’d need to care for her before continuing on their route. Kevin was obviously terrified, but the more time she spent with her rescuers, the more relaxed she became, and before long, she’d changed into the loveliest, most exuberant little dog.
“Given the circumstances, she settled in very quickly,” Mannarelli-Martin added. “She was terrified that first night, but she was also clearly pleased to be alive.” She was bouncing with joy when she saw us during the third night.”

Kevin went from being afraid for her life in the middle of the road to visiting Sequoia National Park with some strangers and their rescue animals, and she didn’t seem to mind. She was overjoyed to be included. She enjoyed every stop on the road journey, especially as time passed and she relaxed her guard even more. The couple couldn’t believe how wonderful she was after everything she’d been through. It was almost as though they were supposed to locate her.
“Kevin is a total sweetheart,” Mannarelli-Martin remarked. “She is very happy and all she wants is to be hugged and caressed.”
The road journey is now over, and Kevin has settled into her foster home. She’s doing fantastic and enjoys playing with her foster siblings, including cats and dogs. Unless she becomes a foster failure, she’ll be ready to find her forever home shortly.
“If I can give her up,” Mannarelli-Martin said, “she will be up for adoption in the next couple of weeks after her last vaccines.” “We’re quite attached.”
Megan Mannarelli – Martin and her husband had been attempting to avoid rescue work for a few days. Instead, they happened to be in the right location at the right moment to make a difference in Kevin’s life.
