In a heartwarming moment captured by photographer Nathalie Kalbach, an 85-year-old woman and her identical marionette twin were spotted feeding a squirrel in New York City’s Washington Square Park. While this sight alone is quite remarkable, the story behind it is truly inspiring.
The woman in the photo is Doris Diether, a well-known housing rights activist who has been living in Greenwich Village for more than 50 years. She met Ricky Syers, a talented street performer who creates marionettes, while his puppets were performing in the park. Despite Diether’s temporary loss of voice due to an injury, the two quickly became friends thanks to their shared love of marionettes.
One day, Diether approached Syers and revealed that she had collected old newspaper clippings and articles she had written on marionettes dating back to 1974. She had also saved recent articles on Syers’ work, which she cut out and saved for him. This gesture touched Syers deeply, and he was inspired to create a marionette that resembled Diether as a tribute to their friendship.
The marionette features Diether’s short, white hair and rosy cheeks, as well as a handbag, cane, and floral blouse and skirt. Syers premiered the mini-me in a short video, which has since gone viral and gained widespread attention on social media.
The bond between Diether and Syers is a testament to the power of human connection, even in the face of adversity. Diether’s temporary loss of voice did not stop her from finding a kindred spirit in Syers, and their shared passion for marionettes has brought them even closer together. The fact that Syers created a marionette in Diether’s likeness is a beautiful tribute to their friendship and the impact they have had on each other’s lives.
In a world where we are often divided by our differences, it is heartening to see two people from different generations and backgrounds come together over a shared love of art and creativity. The photo of Diether and her marionette twin feeding a squirrel is a symbol of hope and unity, and a reminder that kindness and compassion can bring us closer together.
