Hero Zookeeper Risks Her Life to Save 3-Year-Old Thrown Into Crocodile Enclosure

What began as an ordinary family day out at a small zoo in Cambridgeshire quickly turned into a nightmare that shocked Britain. A three-year-old boy was allegedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure by a stranger, suffering critical injuries before an extraordinary act of courage unfolded.

The dramatic incident occurred at Johnsons of Old Hurst, a family-run zoo near Huntingdon, where visitors watched in horror as the child plunged around 15 feet from an elevated viewing platform into an enclosure housing numerous crocodiles and alligators, including massive Nile crocodiles measuring up to 11 feet long.

But amid the chaos, one person did not hesitate.

Tracey Johnson, an experienced zookeeper and co-owner of the zoo, reportedly rushed into the enclosure and pulled the seriously injured boy to safety. Friends later revealed that Johnson had only recently become a grandmother herself, making her instinctive decision to save the child even more poignant.

“Knowing Tracey, it comes as no surprise that she acted this way,” reptile expert Chris Newman said. “She is a very brave and courageous woman. It is nothing more than I would expect from her.”

The child was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Meanwhile, police arrested a 30-year-old man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder. Authorities later stated that the suspect, who was reportedly unknown to the victim, had been released on bail while detectives continue their investigation after he was deemed unfit for interview.

Witnesses described the scene as deeply traumatic. One mother recalled hearing a “blood-curdling scream” before emergency services and an air ambulance arrived at the zoo.

Investigators are examining exactly how the child ended up inside the enclosure, although experts familiar with the site say accidental entry would have been virtually impossible due to multiple layers of safety barriers surrounding the raised walkway.

The zoo’s tropical house remains closed following the incident, while the rest of the site continues operating. In a statement, the owners said their “thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family.”

For many, however, the lasting image of that terrible day is not one of fear—but of bravery. A grandmother, faced with one of the most dangerous situations imaginable, ran toward the danger when every instinct might have told her to stay away.

Acts of heroism are rarely planned. They happen in moments when ordinary people are confronted with extraordinary choices. As investigators work to uncover how this tragedy unfolded, Tracey Johnson’s courage stands as a powerful reminder that even in humanity’s darkest moments, there are people willing to risk everything to save a stranger’s child.
