After waking up with a ruffled royal mane, this king of the jungle appeared to be having a bad hair day.

This lion was photographed with his stray glossy locks in Glen Garriff Conservation in Harrismith, South Africa, looking as if he had just gotten out of bed.

Simon Needham was carefully waiting for the proper opportunity when the conservation’s biggest male awoke from a cat nap when he took these photos.

In the photos Simon carefully awaited, the lion, Tonga, may be seen looking a little less than regal.

‘I had to wait for Tonga to wake up from his siesta, but when he did, he appeared utterly out of it, so I had to photograph it.’ I had to giggle since he appeared bewildered and confused for a little while before shaking himself off.

Simon Needham, behind the photographs, said: ‘People love to see lions but when it’s one that is in need of a serious haircut it certainly draws loving empathy and a giggle from people’
