Photographer Tim Kemple was in Iceland on an eight-day trek when the untamed terrain, majestic mountains, volcanic activity, and the Northern Lights all came together. On the eighth day of the expedition, he was able to take this breath-taking long exposure photograph of an ice climber inside an iceberg against the mesmerizing aurora-lit Icelandic night:
The photographer provided intricate details on his Instagram account about how he typically approaches taking such a shot. Since the exposures range from one to four seconds, a tripod is necessary to keep the camera steady. He calibrates the exposure based on the background after testing the ambient light. He prefers a slightly darker background than the subject. He then introduces the subject while adjusting the headlamp’s brightness so that they do not appear completely washed out when compared to the darker background.
The extra work is worthwhile because of the final images.
