Three years ago, near a park in Mexico, a heart-wrenching sight caught the attention of a woman passing by – an abandoned dog standing alone by a chain-link fence. What made this discovery even more distressing was that this poor pup had been left in a world she could not see; she had no eyes.
Unable to take the dog home herself, the woman turned to social media, posting a plea for help on Facebook. That’s where Mauricio Perez first learned about the dog’s plight.
Without hesitation, Perez decided to rescue her. “She was super skinny. Her bones were showing,” he recalled.
Perez gently picked up the frightened dog and brought her home. With the assistance of his girlfriend, they bathed her and took her to the vet. The vet explained that the dog hadn’t been born without eyes; something had happened to her, possibly an injury or untreated infection. While her past was uncertain, one thing was clear: she needed love and care.
Perez named the dog Concha and made it his mission to heal her soul. He knew he couldn’t restore her sight, but he was determined to make her feel safe and loved.
“It was a process,” Perez said. “We gave her time to know that she was safe, caressing her every day until she started to let go of her fear.”
Over time, Concha’s timidity faded, replaced by comfort and trust. Love had managed to pierce the darkness of her world.
Initially, Perez used a “halo” device to help Concha navigate her surroundings without bumping into things, but she quickly learned to move around the house with confidence.
“She knows where every door is and every piece of furniture,” Perez said. “She knows where her food and water dishes are. She’s super intelligent. You’d never guess she doesn’t have eyes.”
Concha’s favorite place is by the side of her human companions. She thrives on their love and affection.
It’s been three years since Concha was abandoned to face the world alone, but now, she’s virtually unrecognizable from her former self, thanks to Perez’s unwavering love and care.
“She is very well, happy, and healthy,” Perez proudly shared.
Concha has found a forever friend in Perez, and he has found a forever companion in her.
“Concha means so much to us,” Perez said. “She changed our lives. And I am so happy that we could change hers.”
