Following the escape of more than 100 bison from a feedlot in southern Nebraska, neighbors jumped into pickup trucks, horses, and four-wheelers to try to apprehend the fleeing animals.
“We had everything,” Phelps County Sheriff Gene Samuelson said of the effort to apprehend the escapees who broke through a fence and escaped Valley View Feeders in Overton, Nebraska, some 150 miles west of Lincoln, on Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
According to the sheriff, the bison were at the feedlot to be “fattened up” before being slaughtered. He claimed that the herd was probably startled by something and stampeded. However, with so many people after the bison, the animals became afraid and separated into singles and pairs, complicating efforts to capture them, according to Sheriff Samuelson.
“It created a situation where we were doing more harm than good,” he explained.
He claims that the farming village of Overton, population 567, is familiar with cattle ranching but not with bison. Vehicles struck and killed five of the fleeing bison. The drivers and passengers were unharmed, and all of the vehicles were able to escape.
The bison are difficult to see at night due to their dark brown coats. According to the sheriff, if one is hidden in a cornfield near a roadway, it could bolt onto the road and surprise a vehicle.
Sheriff Samuelson was taken aback when a truck driver called to report hitting a bison on Wednesday. “What?” he inquired of the driver. “What did you say?”
Sheriff Samuelson said the animals were captured with the assistance of a Kansas business that specializes in managing bison. He stated the firm that delivered movable corrals had collected approximately 25 and local villagers had captured about 50. He did not know the name of the company. While wranglers are “gaining ground” on the remaining bison, Sheriff Samuelson said some of the stragglers roaming the fields — particularly the tall, dense cornfields — could be on the free for weeks or until the crops are harvested.
“We’re just calming them down,” he explained on Saturday. The herd’s owner said he deployed an airplane to look for the escapees, who had spread across 140 square kilometers.
Diane Scripter, who raises cattle and lives approximately 30 miles south of Overton near Atlanta, Neb., said a dozen bison were near her acreage on Thursday evening. She said at least one was still in the midst of the cows and calves she co-owns.
According to Ms. Scripter, the bison broke over a barbed-wire fence on her land.
“It’s certainly difficult to make the bison do anything it doesn’t want to do,” Ms. Scripter observed. “It’s terrifying to watch an animal charging at you. Gates and fences will not keep them out. You’ve got to keep them as calm as you can, and work with them accordingly.”
Mark Williams, who owns cattle and rents grass from Ms. Scripter’s grazing land, claims that “bison are a different beast” than domesticated cattle.
According to the US Department of the Interior, bison are different from buffalo and are the biggest mammal in North America. Males can reach six feet in height and weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Mr. Williams stated that some of the bison were herded into corrals from one of the areas where his cattle graze.
“They were quite exhausted, so they were perhaps a little more cooperative than they would be normally,” he explained.
According to state records, Ritch A. Blythe is the president of Valley View Feeders. On Saturday, he could not be reached for comment. Sheriff Samuelson said the county attorney is deciding whether to charge a farmer who shot and killed one of the fleeing bison to protect his animals, cornfields, and soybeans. Before pulling out a pistol, he advised fellow farmers to “consider the circumstance.”
