When Golden Retriever Rio gave birth this summer, everything seemed perfectly normal. The delivery went smoothly, and nine healthy puppies entered the world.
But within moments, the family realized something was very wrong — or incredibly rare.
One of the newborn puppies had bright green fur.
At first, the owners thought it had to be a trick of the light. But as they looked closer, the shocking truth became clear: the puppy was genuinely green.
This extremely rare animal phenomenon has baffled dog breeders and veterinary science experts alike. While unusual, it is not entirely unheard of. According to veterinary explanations, puppies can sometimes be born green due to exposure to biliverdin, a green bile pigment found in the placenta during pregnancy.
Veterinary professionals explain that high levels of biliverdin can stain a puppy’s fur before birth, resulting in a temporary green coloration. Documented cases of this phenomenon are incredibly rare — with only a handful reported worldwide.
The puppy’s owner, Louise Sutherland, from Scotland, said she was completely stunned when she saw the newborn.
“We honestly couldn’t believe our eyes,” she told reporters.

News of the green puppy spread rapidly across social media and international news outlets, turning the litter into a global sensation and sparking discussions among dog breeding specialists and newborn puppy health experts.
Thankfully, there was no cause for concern.
Veterinarians confirmed the puppy was perfectly healthy, and as expected, the green coloring gradually faded over the next few days. After several baths and plenty of care from her mother, the puppy began to look just like her golden-furred siblings.
But by then, something special had already happened.
Louise had formed an unbreakable bond with the once-green pup and decided she would never part with her. She named the puppy Forest, a tribute to her extraordinary start in life.
“I had no idea puppies could be born green,” Louise said. “It’s unbelievable — and absolutely adorable.”
Forest’s story is a reminder of how fascinating animal genetics, veterinary biology, and nature itself can be — and how quickly a rare moment can turn into a lifelong bond.
Share this incredible story to wish Forest a lifetime of happiness and good health.
