Famous French physicist forced to issue apology for image he claims was taken from NASA’s new space telescope but was actually chorizo.
The most recent incredible image of the star Proxima Centauri, according to Etienne Klein’s tweet from last Sunday, was captured by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
His message reads:
Image of Proxima Centauri, the Sun’s nearest star and 4.2 light years away. The JWST abducted her. This level of specificity Every day a new world is revealed.
Some Twitter users were more gullible than others, but they were able to discern that the image posted by the prominent physicist was actually a slice of Spanish sausage.
Then the Twitter backlash began!
Klein recognized that many users had not grasped his joke, which he said was only intended to encourage people to question authority figures’ “eloquent appearances” rather than taking them at face value. On Wednesday, he apologized in writing:
I felt compelled to make it clear that this tweet, which purported to be a photo of Proxima Centauri, was just a joke in light of recent comments. Let’s learn to be skeptical of authoritative arguments just as much as we should be of the spontaneous eloquence of some visuals.
