On a freezing January day in East Saint Louis, a brown-and-white pit bull named Adobe was caught on a home’s security camera desperately whining at the back door. Shivering and pacing across the patio, his cries were heartbreaking — a plea for warmth and safety.
Luckily, two teenage girls inside the house heard him. They opened the garage door, allowing the trembling pup to escape the brutal cold while they quickly called for help.
A Desperate Stray in the Neighborhood
Adobe had been spotted wandering the neighborhood for several days before this moment. Concerned neighbors posted sightings on local lost-and-found pet pages, but the frightened dog wouldn’t approach anyone. One volunteer from Gateway Pet Guardians, a local rescue group, had even set a humane trap in her yard in hopes of catching him.

When Adobe finally stumbled onto the girls’ porch, his moment of desperation became his salvation.
Signs of a Lost Family
Rescuers quickly noticed Adobe was wearing a harness and collar, suggesting that he once belonged to a family. Unfortunately, with no ID tag or microchip, there was no way to trace his home.
At the shelter, staff gave him time to decompress. He was visibly shaken by the cold and stress of the streets. But soon, Adobe revealed his true personality — a grateful, affectionate pup eager to win hearts.

From Shivering to Smiling
“He has settled in nicely here at the shelter and has quickly become a favorite,” said Jill Henke, operations director at Gateway Pet Guardians. “Adobe is super sweet, but can be a little shy with new people. Once he warms up, he’s incredibly silly and loves being around people. He adores other dogs, too, and is very treat-motivated.”
Every day since his rescue, Adobe has grown more confident, showing off his goofy personality and using his big, expressive face to charm everyone he meets.

Waiting for a Forever Home
It has been more than two weeks, and no owner has come forward. Now, Adobe is looking for a foster or adoptive family who can give him the warmth and stability he deserves.
“He would thrive in most homes and would love having a canine buddy,” Henke explained. “He was found by two young teenage girls and really took to them, so we think he’d be wonderful in a family with kids, too.”

One thing is certain: after everything Adobe has endured, he will never again be left out in the cold once he finds his forever family.
