In the heart of Tampa, Florida, as Hurricane Milton approached with fierce intensity, thousands of residents rushed to evacuate the city. Amidst the chaos, one helpless soul was tragically left behind. While people drove out of town to safety, a white bull terrier-mix was cruelly tied to a fence, left alone to face the rising flood waters.
But help was on the way. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper, refusing to abandon the animal in its time of need, waded through the treacherous flood waters to rescue the defenseless dog.
Abandoned and Alone
The dog was found stranded just off the highway, tied to a fence near I-75 and Bruce B Downs Blvd. The floodwaters were rising fast, and the pup had no way to escape. Florida Highway Patrol, Tampa (FHP Tampa) shared the heroic story on social media, imploring the public, “Do NOT do this to your pets, please.”
As the storm intensified, the trooper arrived just in time. Despite the dog’s defensive behavior, growling out of fear and confusion, the officer remained calm, gently coaxing the animal. “It’s OK, buddy. I don’t blame you,” the trooper reassured the dog, demonstrating patience and compassion in the face of danger.
The Rescue
With floodwaters reaching the pup’s chest, the trooper courageously untied the dog and carried him to safety. Once free from the dangerous situation, the pup was loaded into the patrol car and rushed to a veterinary clinic for a thorough checkup. Fortunately, after a full examination, the dog was found to be in good health.
Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) confirmed the dog was safe and receiving the care he needed. First responders are now focused on finding the rescued pup a loving home while continuing to aid residents affected by Hurricane Milton.
A Plea for Pet Safety
This heroic story serves as a stark reminder of the responsibility that comes with pet ownership, especially in emergency situations. FHP Tampa and other first responders continue to remind the public to plan for their pets’ safety during evacuations. The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation offers resources on pet-friendly lodging for evacuees, ensuring no pet is left behind.
As the trooper’s brave actions demonstrate, compassion for all beings is essential in times of crisis. This heroic rescue serves as an important lesson: when evacuating in the face of a disaster, don’t forget your pets. They are part of your family and deserve safety too.
