The Incredible ‘Underwater Waterfall’ of Mauritius

Prepare to be mesmerized by the incredible natural phenomenon known as the ‘Underwater Waterfall’ in Mauritius. Situated at the southwestern tip of the picturesque island in the Indian Ocean, this captivating illusion is a sight to behold.

The mesmerizing spectacle is created by the trails of sand on the sea floor being carried away by the current passing through the opening in the reefs, known as La Passe. When observed from an aerial viewpoint, the movement of sand and silt deposits gives the extraordinary impression of an ‘underwater waterfall.’

Satellite views, including the breathtaking Google Map screenshot below, further emphasize the dramatic nature of this phenomenon. It appears as an underwater vortex seemingly emerging off the coast of this tropical paradise, adding to the allure and mystique of the location.

Dominating the skyline is the imposing Le Morne Brabant, a majestic basaltic monolith soaring 556 meters (1,824 feet) above sea level. Its summit spans over 12 hectares (30 acres) and is situated on the Le Morne Brabant peninsula. The entire area, known as the Le Morne Cultural Landscape, has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The secluded and challenging cliffs surrounding Le Morne Brabant provided a haven for runaway slaves during the 18th and early 19th centuries. These courageous individuals formed small settlements in the caves and on the summit of the rugged mountain, seeking refuge and freedom. The oral traditions and stories associated with the ‘maroons’ have transformed Le Morne into a symbol of the slaves’ fight for liberation, their endurance, and their sacrifices. As Mauritius played a significant role in the eastern slave trade, it earned the nickname ‘Maroon republic’ due to the large population of escaped slaves who sought solace on the mountain.

Recently, videographer ReubenMRU took to the skies with his drone, offering a breathtaking perspective of Le Morne Brabant and the adjacent ‘underwater waterfall.’ The aerial footage showcases the awe-inspiring beauty of the location, highlighting the harmonious blend of natural wonders and historical significance.

This visual journey allows us to appreciate the sheer magnificence of Mauritius and its hidden treasures. The ‘Underwater Waterfall’ and the majestic presence of Le Morne Brabant serve as a reminder of the astonishing power and beauty of nature, coupled with the resilient spirit of those who sought freedom against all odds.
