Despite the current conflict in Ukraine, which has uprooted many people and their pets, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took the time to commemorate one of the country’s most valiant service men.
Patron is a bomb-sniffing dog whose nose has actually saved lives.
President Zelenskyy presented a medal “For Dedicated Service” to the 2-year-old Jack Russell terrier and his owner/handler, Mykhailo Iliev, during a ceremony in Kiev on Sunday. The two were recognized for their contributions to the protection of soldiers and civilians on the battlefield against explosive devices.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was in Kiev at the time, was also present to witness Patron receive the distinction with a wagging tail:
“I want to recognize the Ukrainian warriors who are already cleaning our land of mines,” Zelenskyy stated at the ceremony. “And together with our heroes β a great little sapper, Patron, who not only helps to neutralize explosives, but also to educate our youngsters the required safety regulations in mine-affected regions.”
Patron gained to prominence in Ukraine during the Russian invasion, when officials credited him with helping to defuse scores of bombs since the war began.

Patron is a genuine hero, and he now has the award to prove it.
Patron’s handler commented on his Instagram page after the ceremony that “this day will be carved in my mind for a lifetime,” adding, “Glory to Ukraine and the Armed Forces.”
