This Is Not a Carpet But an Intricate Floor Carving That Looks Exactly Like One

A Spanish artist engraved the soul of a carpet (and her childhood) into a wooden floor.

Selva Aparicio, a renowned Spanish artist, astounded the art world with her latest creation—a mesmerizing fusion of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary vision. With delicate precision and a deep reverence for heritage, Aparicio took a traditional Persian carpet design and made it into an ethereal masterpiece ingrained into a wooden floor.

Every stitch, every pattern, was meticulously carved and etched into the resilient surface, as if time itself had frozen to capture the delicate threads of the carpet’s story. The once-soft fabric now dances in harmony with the sturdy grain of the wood, creating a harmonious contrast that bewitched spectators.

The apparent harmony is rather equivocal though. The installation entitled Childhood Memories actually reveals the artist’s personal history of childhood trauma by merging her recollections of the past with a decorative household item.

“Rugs are typically adorned with sacred gardens and oases, and can be moved around the home. This rug stayed put, quietly participating in years of familial abuse. This installation is about covering and exposing, trauma, and bearing witness,” Aparicio told My Modern Met.

“My memories are permanently etched, so the soft fabric is represented in hand-carved scars on discarded wood flooring. I strive to find beauty in the peril and bear witness to the progression of ephemerality-permanence-loss.”

In a departure from the conventional use of carpets to adorn floors, Aparicio immortalizes her poignant experiences by intricately carving a tapestry directly onto the exposed wooden flooring, inviting a raw and unfiltered glimpse into her past. Through this, she breathes new life into the floor, showcasing the beauty of cultural fusion and reminding us of the transformative power of art.
