The most popular website is YouTube, which receives an estimated 8.2 billion organic visits each month.

The majority of the other websites on the list are well-known to us English speakers, but a few are not.

For instance, the Turkish newspaper milliyet.com.tr is the 56th most popular website in the world according to search traffic. Turkey is thought to account for 97% of this traffic.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of the sites on this list are well-known, popular websites.

With an estimated 1.4 billion monthly visits from organic search, YouTube tops the list. Given that there are 332 million people living in the US, this translates to an average of 4.32 YouTube clicks per person per month.

The situation with Wikipedia is comparable. The average American clicks on a result 3.6 times per month.

With an estimated 752 million organic monthly visits, Amazon comes in second.

It’s interesting to note that a single search term, “Amazon,” accounts for 10% of those visits (78.8 million).

Below are a couple more interesting observations from the top 100.

Google

Google.com is in 45th place with an estimated 34.8 million monthly organic visits from the US. Believe it or not, roughly 7.6 million of these (21.8%) come from people Googling “Google.”

But perhaps more interestingly, 3% of Google’s organic traffic goes to the “Travel” subfolder.

In part, this is no doubt thanks to the “Things to do” link that shows up in the results for thousands of place searches like “sweden” and “cyprus.”

Craigslist

Craigslist gets more search traffic than Best Buy, Lowes, Kohls, and many other big names.

Most of this traffic comes from branded searches like “craigslist” and “craigslist seattle.” However, Craigslist’s popularity seems to be declining, with fewer people searching for it over time.

Interestingly, Craigslist is primarily popular in the US, where it gets 95% of its traffic.

I looked up how many of the top 100 US websites were only popular there out of curiosity. The websites on our list that receive at least 90% of their traffic from the US are listed below:
