A disturbing video capturing a group of individuals in North Carolina forcibly handling black bear cubs for the sake of taking photographs has sparked outrage after it went viral.
The distressing scene, filmed on Tuesday, depicts approximately six individuals reaching into a tree, extracting the cubs, and hauling them over a fence. In the footage, one woman is seen attempting to take a selfie with a cub before dropping it and chasing after the frightened animal as it tries to flee.
Law enforcement was alerted to the situation, prompting the involvement of a member of the state’s wildlife commission to assist in resolving the matter.
Ashley Hobbs, a biologist affiliated with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, recounted arriving at the scene to find only one cub remaining. The lone cub, described as drenched and shivering from the ordeal, was promptly transferred to a rehabilitation facility for further care.
Ms. Hobbs expressed concerns regarding the traumatic experience inflicted upon the cub, emphasizing the vital role trees play as safe havens for black bear mothers and their offspring. Trees serve as natural sanctuaries where cubs seek refuge while their mothers forage for sustenance, offering protection from potential threats.
