Lee Sangsoo, a Seoul-based artist, demonstrates that you don’t have to be true-to-life to make powerful artwork. Instead, he expertly bends, twists, and coils spray-painted metal strips to create simple, abstract sculptures that encapsulate the spirit of many creatures.

Sangsoo’s style is straightforward, yet his portfolio demonstrates its versatility. Stretching Siamese cats, pink flamingos, and perched macaws, to mention a few, are all created with only a few metal components. The coiled medium’s captivating movement is both effective in describing the animal’s form and fascinating to watch.

Sangsoo tells My Modern Met, “The painting is in a fictional space, but the sculpture is real.” “You can see, touch, and feel the air,” says the narrator. It exists in the same way as humans do. It is appealing to produce three-dimensional art since we live in a three-dimensional space.” These subtle shapes are not only lovely in their simplicity, but they’re also a lot of fun. Each one looks to encapsulate the animal’s characteristics as well as its form.

Lee Sangsoo, a Korean artist, makes remarkably simple metal sculptures that represent the fundamental features of many animals.
