Kavaan, dubbed “The World’s Loneliest Elephant,” was finally relocated to a wildlife refuge in Cambodia after spending decades alone in a Pakistani zoo. He will almost certainly spend the remainder of his life here, in peace and company with the other elephants.
The 35-year-old bull elephant’s dog’s existence at an Islamabad zoo has caused quite a stir on social media. The elephant’s deplorable health drew the attention of numerous animal rights demonstrators, including the well-known American singer and actor Cher, who has worked tirelessly for the Jumbo’s release.
Cher, along with Mark Cowne and his wife, founded the animal charity organization Free Bush. They cooperated with Four Paws, another animal welfare charity, and also American philanthropist, Eric Margolis, to move Kavaan, which cost them around $400,000.
Kavaan was modified on a Russian freight jet there. Moving an adult elephant via airplane is a difficult undertaking. There were certain unique requirements. He was tested for Covid -19, and once his large steel crate was secured, he was given snacks for his seven-hour voyage. A tube system was even installed to hold up to 200 liters of urine.
When he arrived in Cambodia, he was greeted warmly. Cher herself was present at the Siem Reap airport to greet him.
Kavaan is a male Eastern elephant born in 1985. It is gifted by the Sri Lankan federal government to the Pakistani federal government to demonstrate the two countries’ beneficial cooperation. Since then, the elephant has dedicated his life to the Islamabad Zoo. In 1990, he acquired a female elephant named Saheli as a buddy. It wished Saheli’s death in 2012, as he got extremely lonely and had indicators of abnormal conduct.
He eventually became so angry that the zookeepers decided to chain him. The elephant’s psychological health and wellness suffered as a result of insufficient living conditions at the zoo, as well as the death of his girlfriend Saheli. His anguish stemmed from his emotions. He would spend his time moving his head from side to side, which represents boredom and discontent in an elephant.
Since Kavaan is in Cambodia, he will be in the company of other elephants. We want him to have a happy life there.
