There was no doubt that Kunkush the family cat would travel with them when a mother and her five children had to leave Iraq last year. Kunkush became frightened and fled as the family and a crowd landed on the Greek island of Lesbos in a rubber inflatable boat. Imagine traveling all that distance with your cat, just to lose him in a place that is unfamiliar to both of you.
Kunkush was nowhere to be located despite the family’s best efforts. Though it broke their hearts to part ways with him, they had to press on with their trip to Berlin. A few days later, Kunkush was discovered; he was filthy but generally healthy, and was quickly rushed to a veterinarian.
After hearing his story, American volunteer Ashley Anderson was inspired to bring the family back together. She and her pals made and distributed Arabic and English-language posters telling the cat’s tale throughout Berlin and Greece. As soon as word got out, a different volunteer by the name of Amy helped the cat board a plane and fly to Berlin. They merely needed to identify where his family was because they were getting closer to them.
The family had moved to Norway to start a new life in safety, and they were soon discovered there. Their beloved cat was the only thing missing, but only temporarily. There were many tears, kisses, and hugs when Kunkush and his family were reunited. It’s fantastic to witness such joy in a family that has been through so much.
What a wonderful tale of devotion, cooperation, and hope!
While watching this extremely moving and heartbreaking video, I started to cry.
