Fran the whale was the most popular humpback in California.

The 17-year-old whale won the affection of tourists and whale watchers in the state for many years. The Bay Area News Group claims that she became the subject of the most pictures and the greatest affection.

Fran, an adult female humpback whale, breaches in 2018.

According to SF Gate, her approximately 50-foot-long body was discovered on California’s Manhattan Beach on Sunday, Aug. 28.

According to the internet database Happy Whale, Fran passed away after being hit by a ship. According to SF Gate, her skull was separated from her spine.

Whales of Guerrero

Founder of Happy Whale Ted Cheeseman told SF Gate that ship strikes are heartbreaking. “This is basically being killed as road kill, the most beautiful animal in the world.”

Fran, who was Big Fin’s daughter, was born in 2005. According to Happy Whale, Ferd Begholz gave her the name in honor of his late wife. The whale was well-known in Monterey Bay and occasionally spent the winters in Guerrero, Mexico.

Alisa Schulman-Janiger, a research associate at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, told SF Gate, “I’ve seen her multiple times in Monterey Bay.” She has a large following. She is in fact California’s most well-known humpback whale.

The Bay Area News Group was informed by experts that Fran’s calf was by her side when she passed away. According to Happy Whale, the calf was born recently, and it is unknown what will become of it.

A photo shows Fran the whale lying dead on the California coast. The whale was well known in the area.

Whales often are still nursing at that age, according to Schulman-Janiger, so it’s possible the calf won’t survive.

Ship hits have resulted in the deaths of several whales. According to Bay Area News Group, between 2007 and 2020, ships in California killed close to 50 whales.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium claims that a list of endangered species included humpback whales in 1973. The animal was formerly persecuted to a population that was less than 10% of what it once was.

According to experts, the humpback’s current dangers include ship hits, entrapment in fishing gear, and illegal hunting.
